As it is within the world of Avatar, all 4 nations are split by their respective benders and non-benders alike. All characters will also split just as the nations do.
Further detail on each classification will be shown after this post
Water
Flowing like their element and spiritually aligned, Waterbenders can become adept in both offense and defense. Waterbenders, if female, can be taught how to heal using their bending abilities. All waterbenders, at a certain point, can even transform the water around them into ice.
Earth
Stalwart benders capable of waiting for the right moment, as the earth does, truly. Commanding the earth with their movements, most Earthbenders can make great use of what they're given.
Fire
Firebenders wield the substance of power; generating their own element in the meantime. With little proper defensive methods, most Firebenders stick to the aggressive offensive.
Air
The opposite of Firebenders, Airbenders prefer peace and defense over a greater offensive. Airbenders are also bound to their traditions and culture, as to preserve it.
Non-Benders
The rest of the population within the world. Those that don't possess any bending abilities whatsoever. They're able to make do with weaponry and machinery, however bending will be evidently out of the question.

Waterbending
The art of controlling and molding water to the bender's will. The tribes that house the art of Waterbending reside in the poles, and perhaps found in the Foggy Swamps. Yet regardless of this, each tribe that teaches the art differs in some form or another. Waterbending follows primarily negative jing, with a bit of positive jing. For women, healing is an ability Waterbending can provide. For men, combat and other utility are its primary uses. Waterbenders can even transform water into ice, if need be.
However, if a Waterbender is without water, they're considered helpless (unless they have a water skin).
The Northern and Southern Water Tribes hold a form of graceful and fluid movements in their bending. The Southern Tribe's form is more offensive and aggressive, whilst the Northern Tribe's form is more strategical, architectural, and defensive. The Foggy Swamp's waterbending form, meanwhile, is rather rigid; with sweeping arm movements.
Waterbending Weaknesses/Restrictions Include:
- Lunar Eclipse
- Water Source
(or rather the lack thereof)
- Emotional State
- Lightning
Skill Examples (Rank 1)
Phase Change: Modifying the state of the water they control between solid, liquid, or gas at will
Ice Bullet(s): Shooting minuscule shards of ice at an opponent
"Streaming the Water": Gathering water from a source and swirling it around the bender's body; simply to get a "feel" of the water

Earthbending
The element that functions around neutral jing. Contorting the earth itself to their will, Earthbenders are known to make highly varying uses out of what they're given. Primarily waiting and deciding when to attack, when given the opportunity, Earthbending is a calm and stalwart bending art. The art itself, however, mostly concerns itself with stone and dirt; rarely much else. Most Earthbenders are taught the Hung Gar form of Earthbending, with little else taught to anyone else. The Badgermoles are those that appear to be the origin of the art overall, with their own form to be offered (if they accept that idea).
The Earthbenders can construct large cities and build an entire nation, albeit still highly dependent on their element to do so.
Earthbending forms and combat styles are oddly diverse, as forms that range from rigid to self-taught have been recorded in history. However, earthbenders themselves seem to be just as the earth is; direct, tough, perhaps quite well built.
Earthbending Weaknesses/Restrictions Include:
- Reliance on the Lower Body
- Reliance on Earth
Skill Examples (Rank 1)
Earth/Stone Levitation: Creating a sphere or non-descriptive sort of dirt, stone, etc. and lifting it through bending
Earth Block: Bring up a block of earth and launch it at an enemy
Earth Line: Shoot forward a twisting column of earth through the ground at an opponent.

Firebending
Firebending is the element of power. The only bending art to generate their element, Firebending is a dangerous tool backed by an unwavering force. Said to originate from dragons, Firebending has proven to be just as potent. Like Waterbending, Firebending utilizes chi for the art and is fueled by desire, drive, anger, etc. Fire Lord Sozin appeared to have modified the art to be as such, rather than being something spawned from an unwavering desire to accomplish tasks, goals, etc. Courtesy of the Fire Lord, the "true meaning" of this art became ironically darker as a whole.
Firebending consists of more flowing movements, particularly via kicks and varying punches.
Firebending focuses on positive jing, that of which opposes airbending and (for the most part) waterbending. Firebenders and their art focus on being aggressive in combat, and even overwhelming their opponents with their flames.
Firebending Weaknesses/Restrictions Include:
- Extreme Cold
- Full Moon - Lacking Defense - Lack of Drive - Water or Rain - Poor Breath Control
- Poor Self-Control - Solar Eclipse
Skill Examples (Rank 1)
Fire Blocking: Firebenders can deflect incoming fire attacks with a burst of flame.
Fire Stream: Shoot a stream of flame from a limb. A basic Firebending ability.
Fire Jabs: Jab at an enemy with flame jutting about from a limb. Still rather basic.
Extra detail and information can be found from the Firebending link.

Airbending
Airbenders are not aggressive, nor are they confined or restricted. Those that airbend naturally, or originate as one of the Air Nomads, are typically monks of some sort. Training to obtain special arrow tattoos, the Airbenders are a "nation" divided into 4 sectors. As free as the wind, their bending art is particularly peaceful compared to others. Airbenders prefer defense over offense, with barely a single truly offensive skill within their art. Most Air Nomads are pacifists, after all.
The path to true airbending includes being flexible; finding the path to the least violence possible.
The Airbending art is seemingly the most dynamic, and employ negative jing. Most Airbenders, being as they are, attempt the path of least resistance, as if they're along a swift breeze. Airbending is also used in an Airbender's daily life, turns out.
Airbending Weaknesses/Restrictions Include:
- Principles Regarding Fatal Moves (Refer to Airbending wiki page for most detail on the matter)
Skill Examples (Rank 1)
Air Ball: A sphere or generic ball of air. Has many purposes, including knocking stuff over
Air Cushion: A cushion out of air to break anyone's fall, including the bender's
Air Manipulation: The utmost basic principle of the Airbending art. A bender can build momentum and energy from molding the air itself to their will
Other detail and info can be found via the site info tab at the top of the page.

Non-Bender(s)
The other portion of the world's population. Non-benders, as it seems, possess no bending capability. Society doesn't appear kind to non-benders compared to others, however they make do with what they have, like Earthbenders. Non-Benders can be just as spiritual as Waterbenders, or as flighty, free, and peaceful as Airbenders, etc. To fend against common beasts, benders, and perhaps themselves, Non-Benders utilize weapons and machinery. They have more freedom compared to other character classes, yet any benders will have some amount of advantage over them.
Non-Benders can originate from any area of the world, and likely travel wherever. The Fire Nation is questionable though (unless you originated there).
Any fighting style a Non-Bender possesses could be self-taught, something another Non-Bender created, practiced, etc. There's no true limit on how a Non-Bender could fight; just no bending, of course. Unfortunately, due to the nature of Non-Benders, they have 4 ranks to scale instead of 3.
Non-Bender Weaknesses/Restrictions Include:
- No bending, ever
- Bending as a whole
Skill Examples (Rank 1 & 2)
Weapon Proficiency [Basic]: Non-Benders make more efficient use of weapons, since Benders have little reason to more often than not.
Martial Mastery [Basic]: Martial Arts come easier to Non-Benders, since their freedom in such arts show more improvement compared to bending w/ a strictly defined form. For Non-Benders, martial arts can also include:
Chi Blocking [Minor]: Non-Benders have one true edge over bending. By blocking a bender's chi, they'll be vulnerable. This skill however, is from at least Rank 2 onward.
